Andy Rubin bragged in a Twitter post that the Google-owned software platform had hit the landmark figure as the company continues its market-share battle with Apple’s iOS platform.

Google says the Android platform is already profitable, but its ad-based model is very different from rival smartphone producer Apple and its iPhone handset.

Apple is making huge profits from its mobile operations and, according to financial research company Canaccord Genuity, earned 39% of all profits in the handset industry in the first half of the year, despite having less than 3% of industry sales.

Rubin doesn’t make many tweets – there are only two in the history of his account – but when he does, they count.

The last time he posted was when he spat the dummy over Steve Jobs suggesting Android was not an open platform.
