Microsoft has blamed Yahoo Mail for a data leakage bug in Windows Phone 7 handsets.

Earlier this month, users reported their handsets were sending large packets of data, even when apparently in standby mode, pushing some people over their caps.
Microsoft blamed the data flaw on a unnamed third-party app, but has now pointed the finger at Yahoo’s Mail service.
“We have determined that an inefficiency exists in the synchronisation of email between the Windows Phone mail client and Yahoo Mail,” Microsoft said. “This inefficiency can result in larger than expected data usage for a very small percentage of users.”
Microsoft only admitted Yahoo’s guilt after blogger Rafael Rivera worked out that a flaw in the the mail service meant it was sending more data than necessary.
“Your phone is downloading 25 times as much data as it normally would, had you sided with another email provider,” he said.
Microsoft said it was working on a fix with Yahoo, and advised users to set their Yahoo Mail options to only download new content when specifically asked to, rather than update automatically.
