Research in Motion appears to have slashed the prices of its Playbook tablets, with a base 16GB model now available at Currys for £169.

As we reported late last year, the company appeared to be trying to clear stock when the headline price dropped from £399 to £249 back in October.
Now the PlayBook is approaching the price of the HP fire sale that finally saw TouchPads fly from the shelves.
“As previously disclosed, RIM has a high level of BlackBerry PlayBook inventory,” RIM said in a statement late last year when it announced the PlayBook had cost the company $485 million. “The company now believes that an increase in promotional activity is required to drive sell-through to end customers.”
RIM has yet to provide a statement on the reasons behind the latest price cuts, but the discount looks likely to have come from the manufacturer, with several online retailers offering the tablet for less than £200.
