Rumours that Samsung is considering buying ailing RIM are unfounded, the handset maker has said.
Speculation around what the struggling BlackBerry maker will do to survive has led some to suggest Samsung was considering an acquisition, to give it an alternative to Google’s Android mobile OS.
“We haven’t considered acquiring the firm and are not interested in [buying RIM],” Samsung spokesman James Chung, told Reuters. He added that RIM had not approached Samsung, and that his firm had no interest in licensing RIM’s OS.
The rumour boosted RIM’s share price by 10%, but it has since lost those gains. Samsung has previously been tipped to buy webOS from HP, but also denied that rumour.
With Samsung out of the spotlight, attention has now turned to Asian handset makers, including LG, HTC and ZTE – none of which have their own mobile OS.
“As we don’t have our own platform, it’s an attractive option to look into and we’re flexible about anything,” a source at one major Asian handset maker told Reuters.
