The most popular songs on streaming music sites are set to be rewarded with a spot in the charts for the first time.

The Official Chart Company (OCC), which compiles the traditional Top 40, said it would work with streaming music delivery platforms such as Spotify, Napster, WE7 and Deezer to monitor which tracks are the most popular each week.
Streaming is an increasingly important part of both discovery and consumption
According to OCC, the streaming chart will be the first chart which ranks audio streams from both ad-funded and subscription streaming services in the UK, to reflect the growing interest in online services.
“Streaming is an increasingly important part of both discovery and consumption,” said Steve Savoca, Spotify’s head of content. “Having a chart that reflects this allows the industry and the public to get a much better understanding of the full range of music that people are listening to.”
The first chart will be unveiled at lunchtime on 14 May and published weekly thereafter.
