Google: Chrome’s 310m users make it top browser
Use of Google’s Chrome browser has nearly doubled in the last year, with the company claiming it’s now the most popular browser in the world.
The company has been in tit-for-tat competition with Microsoft’s Explorer in recent months, with Microsoft claiming top spot by some analysts’ rankings and Chrome grabbing the lead according to others.
“Chrome, which we built from the ground up as a browser for the modern web, has seen tremendous adoption,” said Sundar Pichai, senior vice president for Chrome and apps. “Chrome has nearly doubled since last year’s I/O [Conference] — from 160 million to 310 million active users around the world.”
Pichal told an I/O keynote audience that by the company’s metrics it was now a clear leader, although Microsoft has contested recent figures putting Chrome on top.
In May, Chrome held 32.43% of the global market according to StatCounter, topping Internet Explorer’s 32.12%. However, rival firm Net Applications gives IE a 54% share, well over Chrome’s 19.6% in May.
Google said its market share will continue to increase as Chrome extends to more platforms.
iOS version launched
Indeed, the company has released an iOS version of its Chrome browser, making the software available for iPhones and iPads.
The company emphasised the multi-tabbed browsing options in the software and said the strength of its multi-platform approach lay in improved synchronisation.
“Sign in to Chrome to sync your open tabs, bookmarks, passwords, and omnibox data from your computer to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Pick up right where you left off,” the company said.
“Send pages from Chrome on your computer to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad with one click and read them on the go, even if you’re offline.”
Chromebooks hit Dixons
To round off a day of Chrome-based announcements at its developer conference, Google also said it would be trying to make the Chromebooks based on the Chrome OS more mainstream, with the laptop line-up to appear in Dixons.
The company has not released recent figures on sales of its Chromebook hardware, but industry analyst Gartner said in January that sales had been unimpressive to date.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the firm will be pushing the hardware into 100 Best Buy stores in the US and an unspecified number of Dixons retailers in the UK.
The company also said it was working with partners to extend the range, with other manufacturers due to start making hardware based on the concept.
