Twitter has unveiled Vine, an app for taking and sharing short video clips, allowing the six-second clips to be embedded into tweets.
Vine lets users share online six-second, looping clips – sort of like an updated version of animated GIFs.
“Like Tweets, the brevity of videos on Vine (six seconds or less) inspires creativity,” said Michael Sippey, vice president of product, in a post on the Twitter blog. “Now that you can easily capture motion and sound, we look forward to seeing what you create.”
Vine was acquired by Twitter last October, but the service and free app will still be accessible to those who don’t tweet. Vine is currently only available for iPhones and the iPod touch, but Sippey said Twitter was already working on extending it to other platforms.
The video move follows Twitter launching its own photo service, after losing out on Instagram to Facebook – and then removing the image filter app from its “cards”, which allow content to be viewed directly via Twitter rather than clicking on a link.
