Apple MacPad on the way?

Apple could be looking to take on the crowded convertible laptop market with a detachable MacBook.

Apple MacPad on the way?

A design filed with the US Patent Office shows the body of a MacBook with a screen that can be removed from the base unit.

This design differs from conventional convertibles, however; all of the processing components are in the base unit rather than in the screen, meaning that when the screen is detached, visual data will be sent wirelessly from the base unit.

The screen detailed in the patent application has capacitive touch capabilities, and will presumably have a battery on board. There’s no detail about what operating system the device will run, so whether this will be an iPad Pro, a MacPad or something totally different remains to be seen.

Apple is expected to release updated MacBook Air and iPad models later this year.
