Samsung could double its share of the tablet market this year, potentially replicating its success with Android smartphones.

ABI Research predicted that Android tablets would this year “turn the tide” against Apple, which continues to dominate with its iPad.
Although Samsung boasts only slightly more tablet share than Amazon and Asus at the moment, ABI suggested Samsung is the only manufacturer with the innovative nous to take on Apple.
A well-executed Samsung tablet strategy could double the company’s market share this year
“The tide is definitely turning toward Android-based tablets, though Apple will not slouch as it feels the competition approaching,” said ABI analyst Jeff Orr.
“The next opportunity is for a vendor challenger to break away from the pack and move closer to Apple,” said Orr. “A well-executed Samsung tablet strategy could double the company’s market share this year.”
Samsung already dominates the Android smartphone market, accounting for 42% of all shipments last year, leaving other manufacturers with just single-digit shares.
It’s thought that Samsung could leverage its position to demand a greater share of Google’s mobile search revenue, with the firm already reportedly taking a 10% cut.
ABI estimated that Apple accounted for the majority of tablet shipments last year at 60%, down from 63% in 2011, while Android’s share grew to 37% from 31%. Total shipments are expected to hit 150m in 2013, with revenue coming in at $64 billion.
