Surface 2 “close to selling out”, claims Microsoft

Stocks of the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets are “close to selling out”, according to a Microsoft Twitter account.

The claim, which emerged from the Microsoft Developer Twitter account, formed part of a message aimed at encouraging developers to get cracking on Windows 8.1 apps.

Attempting to draw any conclusions on the popularity of devices based on such claims is always a fool’s errand, not least because there’s no indication of the number of units Microsoft has sold. Given that Microsoft was forced to write off the best part of $1 billion on unsold Surface RT units, it’s also highly likely that the company is erring on the side of caution this time around.

There doesn’t appear to be any noticeable shortage of the devices on Microsoft’s UK store either. Both the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 are listed as shipping by 21 or 22 October, only a couple of days after the devices go on sale.
