Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 arrives with 5.2in display

Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Grand 2, a large smartphone with a 5.25in HD screen.

The phone joins Samsung’s expanding line-up of super-sized devices and is a follow-up to last year’s Galaxy Grand Duos, released in the UK for £300.

Samsung hasn’t said when the Galaxy Grand 2 will be available in the UK or what it will cost, though a £300 price tag would bring the device into competition with handsets such as the Google Nexus 5. By comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S4 starts at £399 in the UK.

Samsung has pitched the Galaxy Grand 2 at media-hungry users keen for a larger display but unwilling to fork out for speed or screen resolution.

The TFT display offers a 1,280 x 720 resolution, compared with the Galaxy S4’s 5in screen with 1,080 x 1,920 resolution.

The device comes with 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory, which is expandable by up to 64GB through the microSD slot. There’s a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and a 2,600mAH battery, with claimed battery life of up to 17 hours.

The device also boasts an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.9-megapixel rear snapper – compared with the S4’s 13-megapixel camera. The phone measures 146.8 x 8.9 x 75.3mm, weighs 163g and will be available in black, pink or white.

The Galaxy Grand 2 will come with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, rather than Android 4.4 KitKat. The device supports 3G, but Samsung hasn’t said if there will be a 4G version any time soon. There’s also support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4 and a micro USB port.
