Facebook launches Paper news app – but only in the US

Facebook has unveiled Paper, an iOS app that mixes friends’ status updates with the day’s news.

Paper will arrive in the US on 3 February, but won’t be coming to the UK, a spokesperson told PC Pro.

“At launch, Paper is US only,” the spokesperson said. “There are no plans for UK availability at this time, since it’s a small team.”

The new app is the first to arrive from Facebook’s creative labs team. Like other news aggregators, Paper presents users with a choice of different sections, such as “headlines”, “tech” or “planet”. Each section contains news stories picked by Facebook’s in-house editors, and users can choose which sections they’re most interested in for the app’s start screen.

Paper follows established rivals such as Flipboard and Prismatic. One feature Facebook clearly hopes will keep users loyal to Paper is that Facebook itself is a news section. In theory, that means Facebook addicts don’t have to divide their attention between individual news apps and the social network’s app.

The Facebook section on Paper also appears to be better designed than the dedicated app, with photos and updates displayed full screen. The idea is to encourage users to post better-looking status updates, according to product design lead Michael Matas.

“As you start changing the way you’re displaying this content, we hope that it will change the way people think about posting content,” he told Recode. “Because the two are obviously really connected.”
