Firefox gets Chromecast, but no Mozilla TV hardware yet

Firefox for Android will support Google’s Chromecast media streaming dongle, despite Mozilla working on rival hardware.

Mozilla UI engineer Lucas Rocha announced yesterday that the new feature has been incorporated into the “Nightly” build of Firefox for Android.

Nightly is the first of three channels used in the development of the browser, testing new features before they’re rolled out to more stable versions.

Rocha also shared a picture of what casting from Firefox for Android to Chromecast looks like.

The Chromecast feature will only be available with Firefox for Android, not versions of the browser for the desktop, because it requires the Android SDK.

Firefox for Android is part of an increasing number of apps that support the streaming device, including BBC Sport and Spoticast. However, it’s not yet known when support for Chromecast will appear in the release version of the browser.
