Welcome to Bradford – Britain’s broadband ambassador

Bradford is the only city in the UK to rank in the world’s top 100 cities for average broadband speeds, according to research from network infrastructure company Akamai.

In its quarterly State of the Internet report, Akamai found that Bradford limped into the high-speed list, with its 6.2Mbits/sec average speed ranking 99th globally.

Akamai has so far not returned calls to explain the reasons behind the surprise appearance of the West Yorkshire city, but it was among the first to get access to Vigin Media’s 50Mbits/sec services when they went live.

However, Bradford’s broadband bonus was put into perspective by the average speeds from table-topping broadband cities. Akamai said South Korean cities Taegu and Taejon remained at the head of the list of fastest cities, with average connection speeds of 18.4Mbits/sec and 17.2Mbits/sec respectively.

Asia continues to dominate in terms of connection speeds, with almost 80% of the fastest cities located in the continent – including 60 cities in Japan and 16 in South Korea.

By contrast, Europe accounted for a dozen cities across eight countries, with Constanta in Romania proving fastest with 8.2Mbits/sec.
