Virgin Media said more than half of new subscribers are signing up for services faster than 30Mbits/sec.

The fibre specialist said 54% of new subscribers over the past quarter opted for the superfast services, comparing it to only 28% of new customers opting for connections above 20Mbits/sec last year.
“The demand for superior connectivity is accelerating as more people, regardless of their circumstances, recognise the best digital technology is worth paying more for,” said CEO Neil Berkett.

Virgin said a million of its users – about 25% of its user base – have lines faster than 20Mbit/sec. Half of those are over 30Mbits/sec, while 187,000 are on 50Mbit/sec or 100Mbit/sec lines.
However, the majority of existing customers are still on the low-price 10Mbit/sec contracts.
Virgin also said it had gained 127,000 customers for its TiVo streaming service during the quarter, bringing the total TiVo userbase to 222,000.
“We are increasing the value and mix of our customer base as people add or move to higher tier services and as new joiners increasingly take up higher-value products,” Berkett said.
The ISP added 6,300 net new cable broadband customers after last quarter’s surprise loss of 36,000 customers.
Virgin’s quarterly revenue was up 2.2% on-year to £1 billion, while operating income climbed 26% to £128 million.
