Microsoft Office Web Apps arrive in the UK
Microsoft has made the Office Web Apps available in the UK, via Windows Live SkyDrive.
The release is Microsoft’s answer to Google Docs, letting users access versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote via the web in a browser to create, edit and share documents.
The Office Web Apps versions of Word and PowerPoint can also be used on “most” smartphones, Microsoft said.
A free Windows Live account is required to use the SkyDrive online storage and sharing service, and Microsoft’s Silverlight is needed to access features such as dragging and dropping files.
At launch, the web-based suite is available in the UK, as well as the US, Canada and Ireland, in English, French and Spanish, with more locations and languages added “over the coming months.”
Microsoft has already made bits of Web Apps live via Facebook, letting people share documents via the social-networking site.
