PC market records highest ever growth

The PC market has seen its best ever growth, according to iSuppli – but that’s mostly because last year was so weak.

PC market records highest ever growth

Global PC shipments jumped 22.7% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2010 to 81.5 million, the analyst firm said.

“The first three months of 2010 delivered the highest quarterly PC shipment growth on a year-over-year basis since iSuppli began tracking the market in 2003,” said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for compute platforms at iSuppli.

The rise of Asian manufacturers at the expense of longtime US leaders represents a historic shift in the PC market

“This record growth resulted from strong sales in the first quarter of 2010 combined with weak conditions during the first three months of 2009,” he said.

“Early 2009 represented one of the weakest periods in the history of the PC market, as consumer and corporate demand plunged due to the economic downturn. With economic conditions improving, PC sales rebounded in early 2010.”

Asian growth

The growth was lead by strong performances from Asian manufacturers, with Asus leaping 136.2% and Samsung climbing 83.9%.

Second-ranked Acer grew by 47.1%, grabbing 13.3% of the market and helping close the gap between itself and leader HP, which still holds 19.6% of the global PC market.

Acer’s focus on laptops is paying off, iSuppli said, with portable computers making up 80% of its shipments as the overall desktop market grew by only 1%.

“The rise of Asian [manufacturers] at the expense of longtime US leaders like HP and Dell represents a historic shift in the PC market,” Wilkins said.

Apple was the only US manufacturer with growth outstripping the overall market, climbing by 32.4%. “Apple’s Macintosh line is benefiting from the halo effect of the enormous popularity of its iPhones and iPads,” Wilkins said.
