Microsoft will let Skype and Lync users make video calls between the two services, as it attempts to bring its two communication services closer together.

The company first connected Lync and Skype last year, allowing Skype users to see the online status of Lync users and call them, and vice-versa.
Now it plans to offer video calls between the two services, demoing the capability at its second annual Lync conference this week.
“In the confines of Lync, when you’re using that in the enterprise, you can communicate with customers, family and friends on Skype, enabling whatever communication scenarios you like,” said corporate vice president Derek Burney.
The new feature will be available in limited beta within the next few months.
Microsoft will also release a Lync client for Android tablets this summer, adding to its existing offerings on Windows Phone, iPhone, iPad and Android phones.
Skype has almost 300 million users by the most recent count, while Lync has around five million.
