“New Macs” aren’t all they seem

A forthcoming Apple announcement always sparks a flurry of speculation and so-called leaks – and this Tuesday’s product launch is no different.

Rumours of refreshed iMacs and a fresh generation of iPods are the most persistent rumour on the internet gossip sites.

Some sites claim to have leaked photos of the brushed aluminium iMacs – although as many people have pointed out, those pictures bear more than a passing resemblance to Apple’s existing Cinema displays.

Online gadget site Gizmodo was also running a story last week, claiming insider knowledge of the new brushed aluminium iMacs, a refresh in the Macbook range and a new Mac Mini. However, the site has since retracted the story, claiming that its tipster had in fact been a fraud.

“However, as we wait for Tuesday to come, you can always refer to The Giz’s Own Theory of General Apple Rumors Relativity: never ever trust rumours,” the site claims, with no detectable trace of irony.

Apple Insider concurs with the new iMac theory, claiming that new 20in and 24in systems are on the way, each with new super-slim keyboards.

Whatever happens on Tuesday, it’s going to be worth watching.
