UPDATED: BenQ to ship low cost Blu-Ray recorder to Europe

Taiwanese manufacturer BenQ has announced that it is to begin shipping its Blu-Ray blue laser DVD recorder to Europe for sale in August. The price has been announced at €799 (approximately £533) including VAT although no official UK price has been confirmed.

The launch puts the company ahead of the format’s founders Sony and Philips who have yet to announce their own releases in Europe.

The BenQ BW1000 will be able to record both single- and double-density discs. Single-layer Blu-ray discs will have a storage capacity of about 25GB while DL versions will have a capacity of 50GB.

The machine which was demonstrated at Computex last month is the latest Blu-Ray machine to hit European shores. However, it is the most keenly priced machine currently on the market – admittedly out of a pretty small field. The Pioneer BDR-101A, which was launched last month, is currently retailing in the UK at around the £600 mark.

UPDATE: The model does not have TV playback as we first suggested (although BenQ originally stated that the model would have such playback, in June 2005, when the BW1000 was first showcased).
