Apps aplenty for iPhone

Software developers are hoping the iPhone magic will rub off on them with a host of new applications being launched for Apple’s high-profile handset.

Apps aplenty for iPhone

Online office software firm Zoho has launched an iPhone edition of its software. Interestingly, this will allow iPhone owners to both view and edit Word and other documents from the handset. The iPhone doesn’t offer any document editing features natively, potentially making the free iZoho a must-have app.

iZoho users can also view spreadsheets and PowerPoint style presentations from the handset. The full breadth of Zoho applications is available to iPhone owners who use the regular www.zoho.com address, but the content won’t be specifically tailored for the iPhone’s widescreen.

Elsewhere, Visto claims it can beef up the iPhone’s business email options with its dedicated application. Visto Mobile for the iPhone will allow secure access to current and older versions of Microsoft Exchange and IBM Lotus Domino platforms.

Visto claims many business users may opt for the iPhone over more corporate-friendly handsets. “The unique attributes of the iPhone will generate incremental demand for smart devices and will raise the bar for other phone manufacturers to meet and exceed any user experience enhancements that Apple has made,” says Brian Bogosian, president, chairman and CEO of Visto. “To be useful to business users, it must easily and securely provide access to corporate email – and that’s where Visto adds value and functionality for end users as they consider the iPhone over BlackBerry, Symbian or Windows Mobile devices as their single converged device to support both their personal and business needs.”

Finally, Yahoo is keen not to be left on the sidelines as Apple and Google’s relationship grows ever closer. It will offer Yahoo Mail and Yahoo OneSearch on the handset, providing alternatives to the bundled Google equivalents.
