Sony considers video downloads

Sony is contemplating a return to the downloads business, just days after it confirmed the closure of its Connect music service in Europe.

Sony considers video downloads

It’s movies rather than music that have grabbed Sony’s attention in the wake of last week’s release of its first video-capable Walkman.

It’s also the first Walkman to be compatible with music stores, such as Napster, that rely on Microsoft’s PlaysForSure DRM as well as two video services – Amazon’s Unbox and CinemaNow.

A spokesman confirmed that Sony is “looking into the area as a possible business”, but gave no further details.

Sony does, of course, have its own movie studio, giving it guaranteed access to a selection of box office titles. Whether this could prove a stumbling block when attempting to negotiate deals with rival studios awaits to be seen.
