The BBC News website went down for more than an hour on Thursday, after the broadcaster experienced “technical difficulties”.

The website refused to load properly or only showed fragments of the homepage from about 2pm. Colleagues in other offices confirmed that they too were having problems loading the homepage.
The site reappeared at around 3:30pm, although it was still suffering from intermittent performance problems.
As far as we know, there were no enormous news stories breaking that could potentially have caused the site to be bogged down by sheer weight of demand.
A spokesman for BBC New Media initially told PC Pro that the website was up, but running slowly. However, the left arm didn’t appear to know what the right arm was doing, as a different spokesperson told The Register that the site was experiencing “technical difficulties”.
Finally, the BBC conceded to PC Pro that the site was down, but wouldn’t disclose what had the caused the problems.
