Yahoo! socialises with MyWeb 2.0
Yahoo! is introducing its social search engine to Europe with the launch of MyWeb 2.0.
The service allows a user to collect, organise and tag favourite web pages, searches and search history and then subsequently access them from any computer with an Internet connection.
Unlike the convention of adding metatags to websites that offer key words for search engines to ensure it is indexed properly, tagging allows the browser of that website to decide how it should be described.
MyWeb 2.0 users can add keywords that they feel are appropriate to the websites they visit. With all the MyWeb users engaged in this process, each user can benefit from the tagging activities of others to influence search results.
The social element is introduced where a MyWeb user can use their personal connections to people they trust to access their bookmarks to influence results. So if you have a buddy who is a keen cyclist, you might use their bookmarks to influence searches for buying a bike.
Salim Mitha, Director of Yahoo! Search UK, said: ‘The Internet is becoming more community-orientated and users want access to trusted information. We see social search as the next phase of web search, and My Web helps users tap into the power of communities, using tagging and sharing to improve their search experience. My Web 2.0 combines social search with the power of web search to provide the user with more relevant results.’
Each user can set up their profile to share bookmarks with a subset of their buddies such as family, with all their connections, with the rest of the web or with nobody. They can also use the bookmarks of people they don’t have a connection with.
The upside for Yahoo! is that this is a great tool for boosting its community services, tying in users with other tools such as chat, groups, mail and so on.
