Nokia Lumia 720 review

Price when reviewed

The phone’s 1GHz Snapdragon S4 Plus processor and 512MB of RAM don’t sparkle in the benchmarks, with the 720 recording SunSpider and Peacekeeper results of 1,438ms and 221 respectively. Thanks to its Windows Phone 8 OS, the Lumia never felt less than fluid in our tests, though, and top-end games such as Asphalt 7: Heat ran without issue. That said, we’d be wary about the Lumia’s ability to play more intensive titles in the future.

Those are this phone’s only major weaknesses, however. Battery life is superb, thanks to a large, 2,000mAh battery. It had an excellent 80% remaining on the gauge after our 24-hour test – one of the best results ever. There’s 8GB of storage, NFC, and Nokia’s excellent software bundle, with HERE Maps and Drive delivering turn-by-turn satnav and downloadable maps, Nokia Music supplying free streamed music, and the usual Microsoft Office software for productivity.

Nokia Lumia 720

Even the camera punches above its weight. Although its 6-megapixel resolution isn’t anything special, photos looked punchy in our tests, with balanced colours and little distracting noise. We did experience the odd mis-focus, but this is a minor issue, and the macro mode worked well. The Lumia 720’s camera is among the best of any mid-range phone – again, it’s a tad better than the Nexus 4’s.

The Nokia can’t compete with the Nexus 4 on screen resolution or screen size, then, but it has better screen quality and battery life and a slightly superior camera. With both phones costing the same SIM-free and on contract, that gives the Nokia Lumia 720 the edge – it’s a phone worth switching from Android for.
