Pebble has launched its first colour-screen smartwatch, Pebble Time.

At a glance:
- – First Pebble smartwatch to feature colour screen
- – Seven-day battery life using colour e-paper
- – Pebble reached its inital $500,000 KickStarter funding goal in 17 minutes.
The device can be purchased immediately through Kickstarter, although shipping won’t begin until May. It will be available in shops and on the Pebble website at an unspecified point later this year for $199 (£129 at the time of writing).
Pebble Time: specs
At 9.5mm thick, the Pebble Time is 20% thinner than the original Pebble smartwatch and 10% thinner than the Steel.
Unlike previous Pebble watches, which have has a monochrome e-paper screen, the Pebble Time, which is available in black, white, or red, uses an energy-efficient colour e-paper display. It also has a redesigned “timeline interface” UI, which shows the user things that have happened in the past, current events and upcoming events. This, the company claims, will help highlight what’s important in a user’s day
It’s also the first Pebble to have a microphone, which can be used to respond to notifications or compose short voice notes.
There’s a significant amount of back-compatibility between Pebble Time and the two previous Pebbles. It will work with the existing Pebble app, as well as third party apps built for previous pebbles, and, while a silicon band is sold with the smartwatch, it works with any standard 22mm watch band.
It’s also waterproof like previous editions, and works with both Android smartphones and iPhones, providing they are running Android 4.0 JellyBean and above, or iOS 8 on iPhone 4s and above respectively. Pebble time maintains the standard seven-day battery life of the Pebble and Pebble Steel as well, according to manufacturers.
