Mitsubishi Electric XD205U review

Price when reviewed

Projectors are a luxury many small businesses and education groups can’t afford, but Mitsubishi’s XD205U projector could change that. It’s priced at the lower edge of XGA projectors, but still offers 2,000 ANSI lumens brightness.

Mitsubishi Electric XD205U review

The XD205U delivers 1,024 x 768 pixels from its DLP chip, the standard for business projection. It’s also a manageable size at 2.4kg, and in the carry bag with cables and the remote it just touches 3kg.

Round the back you’ll find plenty of connectors, with the D-SUB for a laptop connection supplemented by composite and S-Video. There’s also a D-SUB output for an external monitor, plus audio input and output.

At default settings, the image is bright enough for all but the sunniest rooms. However, colours seem dull, and after adjusting the settings for best results or choosing eco mode the image isn’t so bright: it’s best viewed away from sunlight.

In our focusing test, we had no trouble getting a clear test pattern across all four corners. Greyscale smoothness was acceptable and text remained readable down to small font sizes. Lighting was pleasingly even. The moderate fan noise won’t distract most listeners either, and the eco mode drops this to a whisper.

What this projector lacks is versatility, and straying from strictly business tasks finds the limits. We noticed colour fringing and noise spikes along high-contrast edges, but what your audience is more likely to see is the lack of pizzazz in colours. It was difficult getting yellow completely pure, and a lack of detail in dark areas made some DVD movie scenes hard to see, although it must be remembered this isn’t a movie projector. The absence of front height adjustment is also irksome.

If you want versatility, or if colour accuracy is important, you need to spend more on your projector. However, the limitations dampen the vibrancy rather than the clarity. It handles XGA resolution, focusing is sharp and you can’t underestimate the value of a quiet eco mode. Wrap that up with a three-year warranty, which includes a loan replacement, and it’s a solid choice for standard business projection.
