Samsung Galaxy S7 could be a double-edged sword

It has previously been rumoured that the Samsung Galaxy S7 will come with two display variants, one with a 5.2in screen and another with a 5.7in screen (or a 5.8in screen, depending on your source). It doesn’t take a genius to predict that, following Samsung’s recent pattern, one of those will be a Galaxy S7 and one will be a Galaxy S7 Edge.

Samsung Galaxy S7 could be a double-edged sword

But that might not necessarily be the case. A report from Vietnamese site, SamsungViet, claims that both the 5.2in and 5.7in models are in fact Edge variants of the Samsung S7. One of these would, presumably, be the Galaxy S7 Edge Plus.

The two Edges will reportedly come out on the same day, which is surprising given that it has only been a few months since Samsung released the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. It may be the case that Samsung want to cash in on the popularity of the Edge model, and potentially get rid of the flat screen version of the phone entirely.

If this were indeed the case, it would be a bold move from Samsung. The rumours, however, are unconfirmed and should be taken with a pinch of salt.Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ review:

Samsung Galaxy S7: The basics

The Galaxy S6 represented a major shift in approach from Samsung. Gone was the plasticy feel of the Galaxy S5 – replaced with a handset that was full of features and incredibly easy on the eyes. With rumours spreading thick and fast about Samsung’s experiments with different processor and display variants for its new handset, attention is now fixed on the Korean manufacturer’s next move in the Galaxy S series, the Samsung Galaxy S7.

While firm specs are thin on the ground, a growing number about the Galaxy S7 are emerging. Here’s the basic information we have about Samsung Galaxy S7’s release date, price and technical specs. For a more in-depth look, head here.

Samsung unpacked live - Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ launch

Following the pattern laid out by the Samsung Galaxy S4, S5 and S6, we’d expected to see the next flagship Galaxy device around March or April. However, rumours are now spreading that the Galaxy S7 will be making its public debut as soon as 19 January.

Korean media outlets are pinning the release date of the Samsung Galaxy S7 to late February. This looks likely, seeing as Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) runs from 22-25 February, and that the past two main iterations of Samsung’s Galaxy flagship were both announced at MWC. However, a Korean outlet has said the launch will happen before MWC, on 19 January. This would give Samsung a chance to extinguish Apple’s iPhone 6s fire as soon as it can.
