The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 may be fast becoming a footnote in Samsung’s history (albeit not as quickly as the company’s accountants would like) but at least one element of it is set to join the company’s flagship smartphone. S7 and S7 Edge owners should now have an update to the Always On Display, bringing them in line with the flammable phablet.
Available through the Galaxy Apps store, version 1.4.02 of the Always On Display software brings a little more customisation and improved battery life: Samsung says it now takes up less than the 1% per hour drain rate previously advertised. Most strikingly, you can now have a photo displayed at all times, as modelled here by my cat, Humphries:
Alternatively, you can set the display a short text, of around 60 characters. Not a great deal to work with, but I tried to get as much of the start of Moby Dick in as possible:
You can also apparently set the display to update with whatever music you’re currently playing, but I was too busy copying and pasting Moby Dick to figure out how to get it running, so you’ll just have to speculate about what I was listening to when writing this up.
If you don’t have Galaxy Apps store notifications enabled so don’t know about the update, you can manually trigger it by visiting Settings | Display | Always On Display | About Always On Display | Update.
As a Galaxy S7 owner, I’d be extremely happy to take on the Note 7’s software, given it doesn’t need it anymore. They must have millions of redundant S Pens available now – if Samsung started selling them with a case for S7 compatibility, they’d have one sale right here.
