Developed by Google, WebP files provide a great alternative to space-hungry images by offering lossless compression. That said, the WebP format is still relatively new, and not every program is compatible with it. If you downloaded a WebP, you might find that you can’t use or edit your file as you could a good ol’ JPG.

Fortunately, you can always convert your WebP images into other formats to use them normally. Here are several ways to save a WebP as a JPG.
Convert WebP to JPG
Although the WebP format is younger than most other image file types, most websites have already integrated it. You also might have unknowingly downloaded WebP images when looking for JPGs.
While most browsers and some image editors will be able to recognize the file, others won’t. To convert a WebP to a JPG that any program can open, you’ll need an image editor already compatible with WebP files. Or you can outsource the task to an online converter. Here are a couple of methods to try.
Microsoft Paint
Using your Windows PC’s Paint app to convert your file is a straightforward solution. Microsoft Paint on Windows 10 and 11 can natively open WebP images. However, if you use an older operating system version, like Windows 7, move on to the next option, as Paint doesn’t support WebP on this OS version.
To convert a WebP in Microsoft Paint, follow these steps:
- Download the WebP you want to convert and open Microsoft Paint.
- Click on “File,” then select “Open.”
- Browse the file you just downloaded and press “Open” again.
- Click on “File” and move your cursor to “Save as…”
- The option to save the image as a JPG picture will appear on the right. Click on this option.
- Name your file and double-check that JPG is selected next to “Save as types.”
- Click on the “Save” button, and your JPG image is ready to be used.
Photoshop
If you use Adobe Photoshop, you’ll be delighted to hear that since version 23.2, the app has provided native support for WebP files without the need for plug-ins. This means you can open your WebP in Photoshop and save the file as whatever image file type you want – including JPG. Here’s how to convert your WebP image in Adobe Photoshop.
- Right-click the WebP file you want to convert and open it with Photoshop.
- Once open, click on “File” and “Save for Web” or “Save As…”
- Name the file and select JPG as the file type.
- Click on the “Save” button, and you’re done.
Online Converters
You don’t necessarily need an additional program to obtain your JPG file. Plenty of online converters can do the work for you regardless of the platform you’re using. This means you can convert WebP images right in your browser, whether you’re using Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, or any other OS.

Save WebP as JPG
If you don’t want to go through the hassle of converting WebP files every time, you can use a handy trick to save them as JPGs right from the beginning. You’ll need Microsoft Edge for this method.
First, you’ll have to enable Internet Explorer mode in Edge. Internet Explorer isn’t compatible with WebP images, so websites have to provide this browser with JPG or PNG images instead. You’ll get to access these files by enabling this mode. Follow the instructions below to change your Edge settings:
- Launch Microsoft Edge.
- Click the three-dot menu in the top right corner.
- Locate on the “Settings.”
- In the Settings sidebar, find the “Default browser” menu.
- Under “Internet Explorer Compatibility,” turn on “Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode.”
- Restart your browser to apply the changes.
Next, you can save the image you want.
- Navigate to the website where the WebP image you want to save is located.
- Right-click the tab and see the “Reload in Internet Explorer mode” option.
- Once the website is reloaded, right-click the image you want to download and select “Save picture as…”
- The file type will be JPG or PNG. Name your file and click on “Save.”
Don’t Let WebPs Stand in Your Way
Nowadays, a WebP file is hardly an obstacle for most browsers, but many image editors still haven’t integrated this compressed file type. To convert a WebP file into a JPG, use one of the methods mentioned above. Microsoft Edge can also help if you want to save WebP images straight as JPGs or PNGs.
