Twitter’s scientists want you to learn one crucial thing about their field
If you wanted the world to absorb one fact about your field in a single sentence, what would it be? I guess mine – which I’ve been banging the drum about for a long time while consistently going over the word count – would be “governments have no power compared to internet giants”. That or “Spelunky is the greatest game of all time.”
But what about those on the cutting edge of scientific research? With so much willful and non-willful misunderstanding of the sciences, wouldn’t it be great if researchers did the same thought experiment? Good news – they’re doing it right now on Twitter.
It all started with this tweet from Dalton Ludwick, a PhD candidate in entomology:
The result is a veritable buffet of scientific facts. Some of them are thought-provoking:
Some are deeply worrying:
More still are clearly shaped by years of frustration of people getting stuff wrong:
But most are just fun facts that you should definitely try and remember to help make very specific smalltalk with people:
The hashtag is still lively three days later. Go and find more scientific nuggets here.
