Dell PowerEdge R805 review
Remote server management is on the cards, as the price includes a DRAC (Dell remote access controller) mounted at the rear of the motherboard where it provides a dedicated Fast Ethernet port for remote web browser access. Providing power is applied to the server, you can use the DRAC to access it regardless of its condition, and monitor critical components and environmental values. The server can be powered on, off, cycled or reset, and full remote control is provided as standard allowing you to monitor and access the server’s BIOS and the VMware direct console.
Virtualisation has a lot to offer the SMB, which can reduce IT costs by consolidating all its services on a single physical system – if you need another server you just create a new VM. The R805 provides a very well designed hardware platform for these services, and with impressive power requirements too: we never measured the system consuming more than 220W, even with four active VMs running.
