When it comes to online streaming sites, Netflix is still the most popular – but there’s still some great stuff to be found on Amazon Prime and Sky on Demand. In fact, Sky on Demand now has around 1,500 films and more than 350 box sets; that’s roughly equal to 180,000 minutes or 3,000 hours of viewing. But where to start? To help you work out what to watch first, we’ve come up with a list of the best films and box sets on Sky on Demand.

The best movies, box sets and series on Sky on Demand: 8 things to watch right now

The best things to watch on Sky on Demand

1. Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones

is one of the most popular series around, and transports viewers to the fictional world of Westeros. Despite the rampant death and violence, Game of Thrones has bagged 86 Emmy nominations and 20 wins. The series is loosely based on George R R Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels, and Sky on Demand lets you watch them all on the small screen.

2. Frozen

Frozen is one of Disney’s most popular films of all time, grossing $1.28 billion and gaining 68 award nominations and 39 wins. Disney’s family-friendly hit can be watched – and apparently enjoyed – by anyone, and even if you haven’t seen it, you’ll probably at least know the chorus to Let It Go, one of the film’s most famous songs. Oh, and there should be a sequel coming soon.

3. The Departed

What do you get when you combine Martin Scorsese, Matt Damon, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jack Nicholson and a $90 million budget? The Departed. Despite being made just ten years ago, The Departed has already gone down as one of the best gangster films ever made. And now you can watch it on Sky on Demand.

4. Grey’s Anatomy

If you’ve already seen House and ER, Grey’s Anatomy should be on your watch list. Another hit medical drama series from the US, Grey’s Anatomy combines an all-star cast with a gripping narrative. It’s currently up to season 12, so it’ll keep you busy.

5. The Lion King

The Lion King is now part of popular culture, and it turns out Disney’s record-breaking animation hasn’t aged a day. Simply put, The Lion King is one of the best films Disney has ever made – and watching it today shows it’s still worth the six major awards it won.

6. Criminal Minds

Released in 2005, Criminal Minds is a police-detective drama with a difference. Rather than normal police officers, Criminal Minds focuses on the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, and tracks their efforts to get inside the head of a killer. Featuring engrossing writing and a great cast, it’s easy to see why this has already been going for ten seasons. A definite time sink.

7. Zoolander

One of the funniest films Ben Stiller has made, Zoolander throws you into the bizarre world of the fashion industry. Featuring the equally hilarious Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson, Zoolander will teach you “there’s a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking”. Although Zoolander 2 recently hit cinemas, the original film is still the best.

8. Guardians of the Galaxy

This list wouldn’t be complete without at least one superhero movie, and Guardians of the Galaxy is easily one of the best. Guardians takes a unique, darker approach than films such as The Avengers or Iron Man – yet it links to them in a cool, unexpected way. This year will see the release of several big-budget comic-book films, and watching Guardians of the Galaxy is a great way to occupy your time until they arrive.
