Sony PlayStation Classic console 20 game lineup released
The PlayStation Classic is Sony’s attempt to tap into PlayStation player’s nostalgia by bringing 20 must-play PS One games back to your TV.
Announced September this year, the PlayStation Classic is a re-imagining of the original PlayStation first released in 1994. Following in the ilk of Nintendo’s successes with th SNES Classic Mini, it’s 45% smaller than the original PlayStation and comes equipped with an HDMI port, USB power and two controllers.
At the time of the announcement, we only knew five of the full 20 games coming to Sony’s micro-console. Now though, the Japanese games giant has pulled back the curtain on the full line up and it’s looking like there’s plenty there for anyone who considers themselves a fan of the classic PlayStation.
We’ve stuck a list at the end of the article, but you can watch the official announcement trailer below to get a snapshot of all 20 titles.
While the PlayStation Classic is aesthetically similar to the original PlayStation, Sony has ditched the disc tray in favour of pre-loading its library of 20 games. There are some assured fan-favourites in there, such as Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII and Tekken 3; alongside some more obscure hits lik Intelligent Qube, Jumping Flash and Wild Arms.
It’s not yet known if you’ll be able to add more games by hacking the console, like you can with the SNES mini. However, it’s likely that someone will find a way to do so soon after launch, particuarly as there are some interesting – although not unsurprising – omissions from the PlayStation Classic’s lineup.
Unlike the SNES Mini, Sony has seen fit to make it easy to change between games by simply hitting the “Open” button for the console’s non-operable disc tray.
Despite all of the careful thought going into the PlayStation Classic’s design, it still remains to be seen just how vital the console really is. Fans of retro games are well catered to in 2018, even if Nintendo is clamping down on ROM distribution sites. Not only can you pick up a SNES and NES Mini (along with rumours of a N64 and Gamecube Mini), there’s a never-ending slew of retro games on Steam and GoG, and entire pages of th PlayStation Store and Xbox Live dedicated to classic games.
Original PlayStation consoles and games are also cheap on Amazon, and Sony has already brought practically all of the 20 games on the PlayStation Classic to th PSP, PS Vita, PS Vita TV, and PlayStation 4.
It’s also worth noting that many of the 20 PlayStation Classic titles also have HD remakes or remasters out already, and those that don’t probably dont have for good reason.
That said, despite the general problems the PlayStation Classic seems to have, it’s a nice little homage to a console that released 24 years ago. In fact, Sony has seen fit to release the PlayStation Classic on 3 December, 24 years to the day of when it launched in Japan. At £89.99 it’s a little more than one may want to pay for a trip down memory lane, but it’s perfectly timed to capitalise upon the UK holiday season.
