Stephen Hawking argues against Brexit as “disaster for science”
Professor Stephen Hawking is the latest high profile scientist to back Britain staying in the European Union when the country goes to the polls on June 23rd.
In a letter to The Times, Professor Hawking and more than 150 scientists argued that voting for Brexit would spell “disaster for UK science.”
“Increased funding has raised greatly the level of European science as a whole and of the UK in particular because we have a competitive edge,” the letter reads.
The end to freedom of movement within the EU comes under particular scrutiny with the academics arguing that current regulations ensure the UK attracts “the most talented Europeans.” The letter goes on to highlight Switzerland’s status outside the EU which has resulted in the country “desperately trying to find alternative ways to attract young talent.”
