Spotify has close to 250 million active monthly users. Apart from staying on top of music trends and curating some of the best playlists, Spotify also has an element of social media platform about it.

How to Add Friends on Spotify

This means that you can follow people, check out what they’re listening to, and even create your own playlists to share with the world.

You can add your own friends on Spotify and see what kind of music they have been enjoying. In this article, we’re going to tell you everything you need to know about following your friends on Spotify.

Adding Friends on Spotify via Facebook

There’s so much you can do with Spotify in terms of discovering new music. And if you get a little stuck about what to listen to next, it can be a good idea to check out what your Facebook friends are listening to on Spotify.

And here’s why that can potentially work really well. Facebook and Spotify are seamlessly integrated. It means you can either create your Spotify account with Facebook or connect the two at any point.

If you signed up on Spotify without using your Facebook login, here’s how you’d connect the two platforms:

  1. Open the Spotify web portal.
  2. Click on your account name, and from the drop-down menu select “Settings.”
  3. You’ll see the Facebook section and next to it the “Connect to Facebook” button.
  4. Enter your Facebook username (or email) and the password.
  5. Grant Spotify the permission to post on your Facebook timeline, if that’s what you want, and then select “Ok.”
  6. On the right side of the screen, you’ll see the “Friend Activity” pane. Click on “Find Friends.”
  7. A list of names will pop up alongside a “Follow” button next to each name. Click on the friends that you want to add.

After adding your friends, you’ll be able to see any playlists they’ve made public as well as their Listening Activity. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that you’ll be only able to see your Facebook friends that have also connected their Spotify account to Facebook. Otherwise, you won’t be able to see them.

Another Way to Add Friends on Spotify

While some Spotify users see the convenience of connecting their Facebook account to Spotify, others shy away from it.

But it begs the question, How do you add friends who might have a Spotify account but prefer to keep it separate?

If you know someone personally whose taste in music and podcasts you appreciate, you could search for their name in Spotify.

And if they have a unique enough name that they’ve actually using on Spotify, you might be able to click that “Follow” button and be done with it. However, in most cases, it doesn’t work that way.

The best way to go about it then is to simply ask for the Profile Link from the person directly. Here’s how you or someone else can send you their Spotify page to follow:

  1. Open the Spotify web portal or app.
  2. Click on your Profile and then the three horizontal dots under your profile picture.
  3. From the drop-down menu, select “Copy Link.”
  4. Then paste the link to an email or text message and send it to your friend.
  5. When they receive the message, they’ll need to click on the link and select “Follow.”

You can repeat this process as many times as necessary, and you can add as many new friends as you want. Similarly, you can always unfollow someone if you decide that their music taste is not to your liking after all.

Friend Activity on Spotify

The friends you follow on Spotify probably have some of their playlist public and have curated them for the purpose of sharing.

That’s how Spotify works in many ways, and that’s why so many celebrity musicians are using it. But in addition to public playlists, you also get to track what each of them is listening to daily.

You can observe how their musical taste develops if you pay attention to the “Friend Activity” pane on the right side of the Spotify web portal. And here’s the thing, “Friend Activity” is public by default. So, if someone wants to hide their Listening Activity, they need to hide it.

Private Listening

Connecting with your friends on Spotify over the music that you’re all listening to sounds like a lot of fun. But sometimes you may prefer to keep certain songs for your ears only. That’s why Spotify grants users the option to enable the “Private Session” feature. Also, if you don’t see what some of your friends are listening to on the “Friend Activity” pane, they may be using Private Sessions too.

Note: Listening in a Private Session also means that what you’re listening to will likely not influence Spotify’s weekly recommendations.
