Spotify is rolling out a revamped version of its desktop apps for Windows and Mac.
The new interface, first spotted by The Verge, sports an even darker look than the current desktop app, which is already pretty grey.
The left-hand navigation panel appears largely unchanged, providing links to music libraries, apps and playlists through a series of links, as before.
However, the central pane has been revamped with a jet-black background, and larger tabs at the top of the window to navigate through various subsections, such as “Toplists” and “New releases” in the Browse screen, for example.
Artist pages have also been redesigned with the same black background, with a large photo of the artist at the top of the screen and less data crammed onto the page.
Overall, it appears to drag the appearance of the Windows and Mac apps closer to the Spotify apps for the iPad and Android tablets, with a greater emphasis on design and less of the feel of an old-school desktop media player.
We’ve yet to try the new app for ourselves – Spotify appears to be staggering the release and there’s no way to force an update, even if you reinstall the client – but we can only hope the close button in the top right of the window now actually closes the app, and doesn’t just minimise it, as it does currently.
