General data backup and restore options are good, as you can attach a local tape drive or create a virtual device using a dedicated network share and secure selected volumes to them at scheduled intervals. The appliance also has embedded agents for EMC Retrospect (web ID: 86296), Symantec Backup Exec (wed ID: 104991) and CA ARCserve (web ID: 78869), which can be activated on NAS shares. We successfully tested with the latter, where we were able to add the appliance’s agent in the ARCserve source selection window, choose from all available shares, and back them up to a remote tape drive. Antivirus scanning is also on the menu, in the form of open-source ClamAV; the appliance can scan all NAS shares, quarantine infected files if required and regularly download signature updates.

For a storage appliance, the Igloo 24T-Stor has a lot going for it. The Open-E software may not offer the best- designed interface, but it’s packed with a wealth of features, while the Igloo itself offers generous capacity and is great value.
