Google Home Mini: The new Amazon Echo Dot rival will be announced today
It looks like the original rumours have been confirmed. Google is indeed launching a mini version of the Google Home. According to leaks obtained by Droid Life, the Google Home Mini will retail for $50 / £50 and will function a lot like the Amazon Echo Dot.
It’s set to be announced at the Made by Google event that takes place in London at 5pm local time on 4 October – you can watch the live stream here.
Google Home Mini design: What to expect
Google Home competes directly with Amazon Echo, but there’s nothing to compare to the Echo Dot: Amazon’s dinky little plug-in to make your existing sound system smart. It looks like Google is taking the hint, and making a mini version of Google Home. Google Studio Apartment, if you will.
The news comes from “a source familiar with the company’s plans” who let the information slip to Android Police. No further details were given, but you’d imagine it would be like Echo Dot: in other words, it’s a Google Home without the speaker. Connect it to your existing sound system, and you can make more rooms in your house connected.
Very much like the Echo Dot, the Home Mini is said to need a power adapter and isn’t intended to be portable.
Google Home Mini UK price and release date
The new Google Home Mini is rumoured to come out at $50/£50 on 4 October 2017. The Home Mini will presumably be available worldwide.
As most of us are aware, the UK price will probably be identical to the US price. So, expect the Home Mini to be released at £50 and not at the more attractive £37 price tag.
This directly competes with the Amazon Echo Dot that costs $50 / £50 in the US and UK markets respectively. It comes in three colours: Chalk, Charcoal and Coral.
