How To Tell Who Viewed your Instagram IGTV Video

What is IGTV? What does it do? How do you use it? How do you make an IGTV video? Can you tell who viewed your Instagram IGTV video?

How To Tell Who Viewed your Instagram IGTV Video

These are all common questions that we’re more than happy to answer. Instagram, the popular Facebook-owned social media service has grown with new features engaging users for years. IGTV is just another useful feature for entertainment, advertisement, and connecting with other Instagram users.

What is IGTV?

IGTV is Instagram’s new-ish video platform. It was released in June 2018 and works either as part of Instagram or as its own standalone app. Essentially, IGTV is like a YouTube channel where creators can upload videos of up to 10 minutes each on almost any subject they like. Where it differs from YouTube is in the orientation. As Instagram is a mobile app, videos are vertical instead of horizontal to match the screen. This isn’t major but it does add a little novelty value. Keep in mind, these videos need to be at least 1 minute long.

IGTV has its own app available on the Google Play Store and iTunes. The app is free to use. The app is a viewing app that provides access to videos.

How to Get IGTV

Once you’ve downloaded the IGTV app you’ll have to set it up and get it ready. Open the app and it will detect your Instagram app for simple login. Enter the verification code sent to your phone when prompted. You can also click ‘Switch Account’ in the lower left-hand corner of the app.

Once you’ve selected the right account and logged in, you’ll be taken to the home screen. Scroll through and you can see the channels and videos published by the people and companies that you follow. Click the icon at the bottom center of the screen (it looks like a compass) and you’ll get to scroll through popular videos.

Finally, click on the profile icon in the lower right-hand corner to access your channels, the settings, or make your own videos. You may have to allow the microphone and camera permissions before you can access all of the features in this part of the app.

Using the IGTV App

For video creation, click the profile icon to the far right at the bottom, then click ‘Share your first IGTV video’ or click the video camera icon in the upper right-hand corner. Once the camera is open you can choose to upload a video from your camera roll in the lower left-hand corner or switch the camera in the lower right-hand corner. To begin recording simply click the record button at the bottom of the camera window.

If you’d like to switch between accounts simply tap the ‘x’ at the upper right-hand corner of the record screen and tap the three vertical lines from the profile screen. Once there tap on the option to switch to a different Instagram account.

What does IGTV do?

IGTV is a bit like TikTok but with longer videos. The current limit is 10 minutes for the public and an hour for some brands and verified accounts. Instagram say this limit will be extended as the platform matures but ten minutes is plenty long enough.

IGTV lets you create videos about anything you like and upload them. The videos can be featured on your Instagram account and will show a small icon if you have an IGTV video. You can use the standalone app too. Content is curated and you’ll see a bunch of videos the app thinks you might like to watch. You can watch and follow the uploader in the usual way.

Creating an IGTV Video With Instagram

One simple way to make an IGTV video is to use your phone camera outside of the app and upload it to IGTV when finished. You can create them in the standard Instagram app if you like though.

To upload a video for IGTV in the Instagram app click the plus sign just as you would any other content. Tap on the video you’d like to upload and click ‘Next’ in the upper right-hand corner. A menu will appear asking if you want a short video or long video. Click ‘Long Video’ and proceed to post as usual.

One really neat feature is that posting an IGTV video through the Instagram app will show a short 60-second feature on your page. Others who don’t have the IGTV app will still get engagement with your content.

Just remember, these videos are vertical, 9:16 and not 16:9 that you’re used to. That means holding your phone camera upright when filming. If you have created Instagram Stories before, it’s the same as that.

IGTV videos can be up to 4K resolution, a minimum of 1 minute and a maximum of ten minutes long.

There are a lot of video editing apps for post-production if you like or you can download to your computer and edit there. If your video looks good enough and doesn’t need post-production, you can upload them immediately.

Can you tell who viewed your Instagram IGTV video?

No, you cannot. You can see how many people have viewed and liked it but not who viewed it or when. If you open a video, there will be a counter at the bottom that says ’24 views’ or words to that effect. Select this counter to see the Views and Likes window. This tells you how many people have viewed it but not who they were.

If they liked your video, their name will show and there will be a link to follow them on Instagram.

Some anonymity is positive, but IGTV still gives creators enough information to see if their content is successful. If you knew your name would appear beside every video you watched you would hardly watch any videos. Yet uploaders want to know how popular videos are so they can make more or change the recipe.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a workaround to show who is watching your content. If someone is bothering you or you’d like to keep your IGTV videos private from unknown users, be sure to update your privacy settings. If you’d like to know whether someone on the app is interested in you (hence they would watch your IGTV feed) you can always see who views your Instagram Stories instead.
