How to Uninstall Microsoft Edge

In this article, we’ll show you how to uninstall Microsoft Edge on different operating systems. In addition, you’ll learn how to reinstall it on your device, just in case you change your mind.

How to Uninstall Microsoft Edge on a Windows 10 PC

Microsoft Edge is the default web browser for Windows. What’s more, Microsoft Edge is integrated with the new Windows 10 update, which supports many applications on this operating system. According to Microsoft, this web browser can’t be uninstalled since it’s an essential component of Windows. While you can always install other browsers and use them instead, Microsoft Edge will stay on your desktop and menu.

While Microsoft claims it can’t be done, it’s possible to uninstall Microsoft Edge from your Windows 10. Depending on whether it was automatically installed or installed manually, there are two ways to do this.

If you installed Microsoft Edge on your Windows manually, this is how you can uninstall it:

  1. Click on the “Start” icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  2. Go to “Settings” on the left sidebar.
  3. Select “Apps” on the new window.
  4. Proceed to “Apps & features” on the left side of the window.
  5. Locate “Microsoft Edge” on the list of apps and click on it.
  6. Choose the “Uninstall” button.
  7. Confirm that you want to uninstall Microsoft Edge.

That’s all there is to it. On the other hand, if Microsoft Edge were automatically installed on your Windows 10, the uninstallation process would be slightly more complicated. But it isn’t impossible.

To do this, we’ll be using the Command Prompt. Follow these instructions below to see how it’s done:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Click on the three dots in the upper-right corner and select “Help & feedback.”
  3. Continue to “About Microsoft Edge” on the drop-down menu.
  4. Copy the Microsoft Edge Version number and save it somewhere.
  5. Type in “Command Prompt” in the search bar on your computer and select “Run as administrator.”
  6. Copy this command and paste it into the Command Prompt window:
    cd %PROGRAMFILES(X86)%\Microsoft\Edge\Application\xxx\Installer
Note: replace the “xxx” with the Microsoft Edge Version number you saved earlier.
  7. Press “Enter” on your keyboard.
  8. Do the same with the following command:
    setup.exe --uninstall --system-level --verbose-logging --force-uninstall
  9. Press “Enter” again.

This command will immediately uninstall Microsoft Edge from your Windows 10. You won’t even need to restart your device. However, even though you uninstalled Microsoft Edge, it might be automatically reinstalled with your next Windows 10 update. If you want to make sure this doesn’t happen, this is what you need to do:

  1. Go to the search bar in the bottom-left corner of your screen and type in “Regedit”.
  2. Select “Run as administrator.”
  3. Copy this code and paste it to the Registry Editor:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft
  4. Click on the “OK” button.
  5. Locate the Microsoft folder in the Registry Editor and right-click on it.
  6. Choose “New” on the pop-up menu and then select the “Key” option.
  7. Give it the name “EdgeUpdate.”
  8. Right-click on the “EdgeUpdate” folder and choose “New” once more.
  9. Proceed to “DWORD (32-bit) Value.”
  10. Name the folder “DoNotUpdateToEdgeWithChromium”.
  11. Doble-click on the value.
  12. Under “Value Data,” type in “1”
  13. Select “OK.”

Now that you’ve done this, Microsoft will be permanently deleted from your Windows 10. Although this process may seem complicated, it’ll only take a few minutes if you follow all the steps from this guide.
