Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 – How to Unlock for Any Carrier

If your Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is carrier-locked, you can unlock it in a few simple steps. Keep in mind, however, that the steps are not the typical way to unlock a smartphone. And you will need access to a PC to complete the process.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 - How to Unlock for Any Carrier

Step 1 – Open Developer Mode

First, you need to enable Developer Mode on your phone. To do this, tap on the Settings icon and then tap on About Phone.

On the next screen, tap on MIUI Version approximately 7 times. Your phone will flash messages at the bottom of the screen indicating if you need to tap on it more or if you have successfully enabled Developer Mode.

Step 2 – Enable OEM Unlocking

Next, tap the back key to go to the Settings menu again. Scroll down and tap on Additional Settings. In the next menu, tap on Developer Options and enable “OEM unlocking” by toggling the switch to on.

Step 3 – Mi Unlock Status

While still in the Developer Options menu, tap on Mi Unlock Status. This will display whether your phone is unlocked or not. The screen will also display a web address from which to download the unlock tool to your PC.

After you’ve taken note of the download website, tap on the button at the bottom that says “Add account and device”.

On the next screen, you will be instructed to visit Xiaomi’s website to register your device for the unlock. After you do so, your Redmi Note 4 should be displayed at the top of the screen.

Step 4 – Fastboot Mode

Once you’ve successfully registered your device for unlock, it is time to power it off and enter Fastboot Mode.

If you don’t know how to get your smartphone into this mode, simply turn your phone off completely and then press the Power button and the Volume Down button at the same time. Keep these buttons pressed until you see the Fastboot logo pop up on your screen.

Step 5 – Connect Device to PC

While your phone is in Fastboot mode, connect it via a USB cable to your PC. Next, launch Xiaomi’s Mi Unlock software and sign in to your account when prompted.

Step 6 – Unlock Your Device

The user interface for the software is relatively simple. You should see that your phone is connected at the top of the screen. If it is, click on the Unlock button near the bottom of the screen to start the process.

When you have successfully unlocked your phone, a pop-up screen will appear to confirm this. The last step is to click on “Reboot phone” to finalize the unlocking process. After clicking on this button, you should see your Redmi Note 4 reboot. You can safely disconnect your device from the PC now.

Step 7 – Check Device Status

To make sure that the unlocking was successful, simply go back to Developer Options and tap on Mi Unlock Status again. Your device should now show that it is unlocked.

Final Thought

Xiaomi’s method of unlocking phones may seem daunting, but it is relatively simple once you understand the process. Using this method also doesn’t require you to pay a fee or contact a third-party unlocking company the way you would with other Android devices.
