How to Change Name in Valorant

Riot, the company responsible for the immensely popular online multiplayer battle arena, League of Legends, is behind Valorant too. This new entry into the first-person shooter (FPS) genre has been growing and shows no signs of stopping any time soon. Did you know that in Valorant, you can change your name?

When it comes to Valorant, how to change name differs from League of Legends. You’ll learn how to do just that in this article. We’ll also answer some questions related to Valorant.

How to Change Display Name on Valorant?

Note that your Valorant display name and isn’t going to be the same as your Summoner name (should you also play LoL). Since you need a Riot Games account for both games, we believe you should know about the difference. Summoner names will eventually be completely replaced by Riot IDs.

Your Riot ID will correspond to your display name in Valorant. A Riot ID consists of two parts; a combination of letters and symbols to form your name and a hashtag of three to five letters and/or symbols. The hashtag is there to help others add you on Valorant or other games.

Since there’s a hashtag system, you can encounter two players with Ethan01 as their display name. However, their hashtags will be different.

When you’re changing your Riot ID, you can change both your display name and the hashtag. An example is changing from “FalconPaunch#007” to something like “LucinaTR#Fates”.

Now that you know how Riot IDs work, it’s time to take a look at the steps:

1. Exit your Valorant client first if you haven’t done so already.
   
2. Open your favorite browser and go to riotgames.com.
3. If needed, verify your account by logging into the email address you used to create the account.
4. Log in with your details.
   
5. At the left side of the account box, select “Riot ID” from the options.
   
6. Click on your current Riot ID and delete it.
   
7. Enter your new display name.
   
8. Select “Submit” and confirm the change.
   
9. Now you can play Valorant under your new display name.

While you have complete freedom over what you can change, Riot decided in 2020 that offensive names will be forcibly changed. Some of the offending items that can force Riot to take actions are:

• Hate speech
• Any slurs
• Disruptive names

The next time the offender logs in to the Riot client, they will be forced to change their Riot ID into something allowed by the Code of Conduct. Riot decided to implement forced name changes to ensure Valorant will be welcome for all players of all backgrounds.

How to Change Tagline on Valorant?

You might be wondering what a “tagline” is, but it’s actually pretty simple. Your Valorant tagline is the hashtag! Both the tagline and hashtag refer to the same thing.

Earlier, we talked about how you have complete control over the hashtags, provided you entered three to five letters or numbers. You can change your tagline without altering your display name.

If your tagline hasn’t been changed, Riot will assign you one based on your region, such as NA1 for North America.

There’s also an option to randomize your tagline. The button is located below the field for changing your tagline.

1. Exit your Valorant client first if you haven’t done so already.
   
2. Open your favorite browser and go to riotgames.com.
3. If needed, verify your account by logging onto the email address you used to create the account.
4. Log in with your details.
   
5. At the left side of the account box, select “Riot ID” from the options.
   
6. Click on your current tagline and delete it.
   
7. Enter your new tagline.
   
8. Select “Submit” and confirm the change.
   
9. Now you can play Valorant with the new tagline.

Make sure you give others the correct tagline if you want them to add you. While everyone can see your tagline, entering the wrong one can result in your friends adding another person.

If you don’t know what your tagline is, you can move your mouse over your display name. Your current tagline will appear in a tiny pop-up.

Do I Need to Pay to Change My Valorant Name?

No, you don’t have to pay anything to change your Valorant display name and tagline. It’s completely free to change.

Many LoL players ask this question. To change your Summoner name, you had to purchase a name change before you could change it. A Summoner name change costs 1300 RP or 13,900 BE.

How Often Can I Change My Riot ID?

While changing your Riot ID is completely free, there’s a caveat. You can only change it once every 30 days. Between these 30 days, you’re stuck with the current display name and tagline, so you should start thinking of a new one.

Can I Only Play Valorant on Windows 10?

Right now, Valorant is only available on Windows 10 through a client download. There are currently no concrete plans to port Valorant to consoles. That said, Riot isn’t ignoring the possibilities.

Producer Anna Donlon told GameSpot in an interview that Riot Games is prototyping a console port. Despite this statement, the company still doesn’t consider it a priority. The team is still open to the idea but has to consider the possibilities of offering a satisfactory experience on consoles.

There are also no official release dates or timeframes for Valorant on consoles. Beyond testing ports, Riot Games has said nothing about a definite console release.

Valorant on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch could be another hit. It would make the game more accessible, particularly with crossplay. At the time of writing, we aren’t aware of any new plans for a Valorant console release. Perhaps time will tell whether this dream will become reality.

Is Valorant Free to Play?

With a Riot Games account, you can download and start playing Valorant without spending a single cent. The game is free-to-play, but also has microtransactions for cosmetic items. These items don’t grant players advantages for equipping them.
