Sending a gift in Messenger is simple once you learn how to do it. Essentially, what we’re doing here is adding an effect that wraps any message you type in pretty wrapping paper with a bow.

  1. All you need to do to achieve this effect is to open the Facebook Messenger app from your iPhone or Android device.
  2. Select the recipient of your message and tap on the message box to type your message. Be sure to type your message first, otherwise the present will not appear in the selection.
  3. Then, tap on the Stickers icon. Messenger App
  4. Now, tap on Effects and then tap on the present. Messenger App - Effects
  5. There is no need to take any additional steps. As soon as you tap the present icon, your message will automatically send. So, beware of this, because you might accidentally confess your love to a crush before you’re really ready to.
  6. When the recipient taps on the message you’ve sent, the lid will come off and they can read your message!

That’s all there is to sending a gift wrap message in Facebook Messenger.

How to Unsend a Gift Message

If you’ve tapped the present icon and sent a message you weren’t ready to, you can un-send it thankfully. All you need to do is open Facebook Messenger and tap on the recipient’s messages. Then, follow these steps:

  1. Long-press the gift and tap Remove in the lower right-hand corner. Messenger App Unsend
  2. Tap Unsend and confirm when the option appears.

When you unsend a message, the recipient will get a notification that you retracted a message, but they won’t know what that message said.

If for some reason you aren’t seeing the gift option, or it just isn’t sending, there are a few things to check.

As stated previously, if you haven’t typed anything in the text box, the gift won’t appear in the ‘Effects’ folder. Try typing your message first, then follow the instructions above.

Assuming you’ve typed your message but the option to gift wrap it still doesn’t appear it’s likely because you can’t send a gift to a Messenger Group, nor can you send it from a web browser. Try sending your gift from the Messenger app or to individual participants.

Lastly, Facebook Messenger’s features come and go. If you haven’t updated the app lately, it could be because your app is out of date. Head over to the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store and update Messenger. Then try to send your message again.

Other Neat Effects

There are plenty of other effects available to liven up your texts thanks to Facebook Messenger. Aside from stickers, GIFs, and emojis, effects add substance to the texts that you’ve typed.

At the time of writing, Messenger offers hearts, confetti, and fire along with your gift-wrapped messages. Following the same instructions as above, simply type your message, tap on the sticker icon, and tap on the effect you’d like to add.
