HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw review

HP’s Color LaserJet Pro M177fw will appeal to SMBs looking for a cheap colour laser MFP.

The M177fw retains the core features of the older M175nw model (with the addition of fax functions), and mono and colour print speeds remain at 17ppm and 4ppm respectively. Printing costs haven’t improved: a mono page costs more than 3p and colour almost 14p – pricey even by budget MFP standards.

The HP partially redeems itself elsewhere. HP’s Smart Install gets you up and running quickly, and all key functions can be accessed from the colour touchscreen. This also provides access to HP’s print app store where you can browse predefined sample forms and print templated documents.

For cloud printing, you need to register with HP’s Connected service using the printed claim code. This assigns an email address to the printer so that print jobs can be sent remotely. You can decide whether colour or mono output is allowed for remote users, and also who can send emails to the printer. Google Cloud Print worked well, too.

You can scan to email, file or application, but only using the locally installed HP Software utility; there isn’t a USB port to scan to or from. Duplexing is supported, but pages have to be turned over manually. From our iPad, we could print documents directly using Wi-Fi Direct or AirPrint.

Print speeds are exactly as claimed. The first page takes up to 20 seconds to appear, and output quality is good with razor-sharp text and detailed, vibrant colour photos. Quality isn’t quite up there with our A-Listed HP LaserJet Pro 200 Colour MFP M276n, but it matches its stablemate for scan quality. Colour copy speeds using the ADF trudge along at a sluggish 3ppm.

Ultimately, the M177fw can’t compete with HP’s wireless-enabled M276n, which is faster, has twice the memory and is cheaper to run.
