Sound Not Working in Snapchat – What to Do

A lot of Snapchat users have complained, claiming that sound isn’t working on their app. For example, they might play a Snap Video or a Snapchat story and don’t hear any sound. This has actually become a very common problem across all other social media platforms as well (Instagram, Facebook, etc.).

Sound Not Working in Snapchat - What to Do

There are many possible causes for this issue. Some of them are more serious than others. Luckily, there are also a few easy methods that usually solve the problem. This article will show you what to do when your Snapchat sound stops working.

There are two possible causes for your Snapchat sound issues. One is your phone; if there is an issue with your phone other sounds likely will not work. The other issue can be the app itself; if all other apps are working properly, it’s likely a software issue. Depending on which one is the problem there are various fixes.

NOTE: The following methods will work on both Android and iOS devices.

Problems With Your Phone

To isolate the issues with your Snapchat sound you must first understand where the issue is originating from. Consider these troubleshooting options to locate the issue if it’s your device:

  • The volume – Is your volume turned down?
  • Your ringtones and other alerts – Are your ringtones workings? If not, this could indicate a speaker or settings issue.
  • The app permissions – Does Snapchat have access to your microphone in your phone’s settings?
  • Your Bluetooth is on and connected to a random device.

Problems With the App

  • Is the app updated in the App Store or Google Play Store? – An outdated application may not work properly.
  • Other apps sounds are working fine – Is YouTube or Facebook working properly?
  • DownDetector – Have you checked the DownDetector website for any Snapchat issues?

If you’ve narrowed down the source of the problem, it’s much easier to find a fix. Let’s talk about options to get your sound working again.

Fixing the Problem – Your Phone

If the issue appears to be with your phone, here are a few options:

Check Your Phone’s Silent Mode

You wouldn’t believe how many people forget about the basic features of their phones. With that in mind, you should check your phone’s Silent mode before you go any further.

You might have just put your phone on Silent mode by accident and have forgotten to turn the sound back on again. Most smartphones won’t play Snapchat sound or sound in any other app when Silent mode is turned on.

To fix this, disable your phone’s Silent mode and enable auto sound play so that sound is always played when you enter the Snapchat app. iPhone users should check the toggle switch on the right-hand side of the phone’s body (just above the volume up button). Android users may need to visit their settings to ensure their phone is not on silent.

Turn Your Phone’s Volume Up

There are four different volume settings on your mobile phone. These settings are Ringtone, Media, Notifications, and System. You can configure all of them however you’d like.

The Media and Notifications options are of interest to the problem at hand. Make sure that both of these options have the volume enabled and turned up. You can access these configurations by pressing your phone’s volume button and then tapping on the Settings icon that will pop up next to Ringtone.

Volume Settings

You can also check a certain Snapchat video and turn the volume button up as soon as it starts playing. This will immediately crank your Media volume up.

iPhone users have fewer sound options than Android users. Simply check the ‘Sounds & Haptics’ settings to ensure that the volume is turned up.

Turn Off Your Phone’s Bluetooth

If you have connected your mobile phone to speakers (or similar devices) via Bluetooth, it might be that the speakers are still using your phone’s sound. Try turning your phone’s Bluetooth off and playing Snapchat stories again.

Reboot Your Phone

In case none of these methods have done the trick for you, simply reboot your phone. It could be that your phone’s cache memory has become full or that there’s something wrong with your phone’s operating system (Android or iOS).

By rebooting your phone, you will refresh its temporary memory and also fix temporary bugs.

App Permissions

Whether you’re using iPhone or Android, head over to your phone’s settings and make sure that the Microphone permissions are on. If you’re having trouble recording audio, or even if you can’t hear it, turn the permissions on and restart the application.

Safe Mode

If you’re using an Android device put your phone in Safe Mode. Assuming none of the sounds on your phone or in your apps are working until you go into Safe Mode there’s another application interfering with your sounds.

Safe Mode will help you to narrow down the source of the problem as it disables all third-party software on your phone. If your sounds work in Safe Mode start deleting unfamiliar applications, reboot the phone as you normally would, and check Snapchat again.

Still No Sound?

You’ve tried everything and still, no sound is coming from your phone. This is likely a hardware issue. Your speakers may need cleaning (just use a soft-bristled brush to clean the speaker), your phone’s case may interfere with the noise (take the case off even if you’ve had it on for a while), or take it to a specialist to have a new speaker installed.

Fixing the Problem – The App

Assuming all of your other applications are working properly, we should focus on the Snapchat application.

Updating Snapchat

As mentioned above, an app that is not properly updated may experience glitches and bugs. If there is an option to update the app then do so. Close the app and restart it to see if the sound is working.

Reinstall Snapchat

Reinstalling the Snapchat app should be your last resort. If you have tried everything that we have mentioned, it could just be that there’s something wrong with the app itself.

If there was a recent update, the files might not have downloaded correctly. It could also be that another file you have downloaded has corrupted the Snapchat files.

Snapchat

Either way, uninstall and download the app again. This won’t delete your Snapchat account and everything will be the same as it was. The only difference is that you will automatically download the latest version of the app.

Ask Snapchat for Help

By visiting the Settings within the app you can report an issue directly to Snapchat. Simply tap on your profile icon in the upper right-hand corner then tap the settings cog in the upper right-hand corner. Scroll down and tap ‘I spotted a Bug’ or shake to report the issue.

This is especially useful if certain sounds are not working (like your Bitmoji sounds). Submit the report by filling out all of the details and Snapchat will respond with more troubleshooting tips or a helpful solution.

Turn the Volume Up then Down

Several users who have this issue have stated that clicking the Volume Up button then clicking the Volume Down button instantly resolved the issue. Although we don’t have some very technical explanation for why this works, it seems to be a great solution.

Use your phone’s volume buttons to make the app aware that you are trying to listen. Once it understands that it needs to provide you with sound, it should start working without having to reinstall the app, clear the cache, etc.

Snapchat Sound Restored

Sound problems in Snapchat are very common, but they are also very easily solvable. Hopefully, one of the methods described in this article has helped fix the issue and you can once again hear sound in Snapchat.
