With 50,000 games to choose from, Steam is genuinely one of the best digital game distribution services in the world. In addition to that, the platform has over 20 million logged-in users during peak hours.

How to Appear Offline in Steam

You can buy games online and track your progress as you play them. Also, you can use the built-in chat to communicate with your friends. Considering that Steam client keeps running in the background of your computer even when you’re not playing any games, you will appear as online unless you go invisible or turn the chat off.

Appearing Offline

With so many people on Steam at any given moment, chances are some of your friends will see you’re online and hit you up to see if you want to play. And if you’re trying to work on your computer, getting chat messages can ruin your concentration.

To prevent such a scenario, follow the next few steps to make yourself invisible on Steam chat.

  1. Open Steam on your computer and log in if required.
  2. Click the “Friends” tab from the top menu. Steam Friends menu
  3. Next, select “Invisible” from the drop-down menu. Steam Visibility settings

You will now appear offline to everybody on Steam. However, you’ll still be able to chat if you want to.

If you choose the Offline mode in step three, that will disconnect you entirely from Friends & Chat. To activate the chat again, click “Friends & Chat” from the main menu, and on the next screen, click “Sign In.”

When using chat, and Steam main window is not visible, you can make yourself appear offline using this shortcut as well:

  1. In the chat window, click the downward-pointing arrow next to your profile image. Steam Chat Settings
  2. Select the “Invisible” option from the drop-down menu that appears. Select “Offline” to go offline. Steam Chat Settings 2

Most Popular Games on Steam

Valve created Steam many years ago. As a game developer, the company made one of the most iconic games ever – Half-Life. The 1998 hit game became famous for its engaging film-like single-player campaign. As such, Half-Life was never meant to have a multiplayer mode.

However, a couple of enthusiasts used the game editor that came with Half-Life to create their very own mod that they could play in multiplayer. Just a year after Half-Life’s release, Counter-Strike was born. Pitting counter-terrorist and terrorist teams against each other, Counter-Strike took the world by storm.

Today, the latest iteration of the game is called Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and it’s the most played game on Steam by far. With typical peaks of over 850,000 players on Steam, it significantly surpasses Dota 2, which gets a little over 600,000 players in peak intervals.

In a different genre than Counter-Strike, Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) set in a fantasy world of sword, magic, and monsters. It’s worth mentioning that Valve also developed and published Dota 2.

With some 160,000 players in peak moments, the third place goes to Half-Life 2: Deathmatch. It’s an online tactical shooter game, developed and published by Valve. Described as a fast paced multiplayer action game, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch features a new take on their previous deathmatch play.

For fans of the original Half-Life, check out this sequel for even more action-packed fun.

Staying Below Radar

Thanks to the “Invisible” and “Offline” features of Steam’s chat, you can now get your work done without distractions. Of course, this will also help you to focus while playing your favorite games, especially those high-octane first-person shooters like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
