Commenting on Instagram posts is a great way to interact with the Instagram community. Instagrammers can pose questions, raise ideas, and share opinions. But what if you notice a spelling mistake or an unclear sentence after posting? Though you can’t edit comments, the workaround will achieve the same result. Read on to find out what it is.

How to Edit Comments on Your Own Post in Instagram on the iPhone

You can’t edit the comments you or someone else has made on your posts directly, but you can still achieve your goal.

To “edit” a comment you’ve written on one of your posts, access the post from a browser, copy and paste the comment in a note app for editing, repost the edited version and delete the old one.

To do this using your iPhone, follow the directions below.

  1. Sign in to your Instagram account.
  2. Find the comment you wish to edit.
  3. At the top right, tap the vertical three-dotted icon.
  4. Select “Copy Link.”
  5. Leave Instagram to open a browser on your phone.
  6. Paste the link into the address bar to navigate there.
  7. At the top left of the browser, tap “AA.”
  8. Tap on “Website Settings” and enable the “Request Desktop Website” toggle switch.
  9. Select “Done.”

You’ll then be taken to the desktop version of Instagram.

  1. To prevent the prompts for the app version, tap “Log in” to sign in to your account on the top navigation bar.
  2. Only a few comments will display. Tap “View all x comments” to see all.
  3. Go to the comment you want to change, then long-press it to get the “Select All” and “Copy” options.
  4. Tap “Select All” to highlight the text, then tap “Copy.” The text will be copied to your clipboard.
  5. Open a note app, then long-press anywhere on the page to get the “Paste” option.
  6. “Paste” the text, then edit the text.
  7. Once you’re happy with the changes, select and copy the text to your clipboard.

To delete the old comment, follow these steps:

  1. Go back to the post and comment in the Instagram app.
  2. Swipe left on the comment.
  3. Tap on the white and red trash bin icon to delete it.
  4. At the top of your screen, a red banner will display confirming the deletion.

Then, to repost your edited version:

  1. Tap the text bubble icon beneath your photo or video.
  2. Tap and hold inside the text field.
  3. Tap “Paste” to paste your edited comment from the clipboard.
  4. When you’re satisfied with the text, tap “Post.”

How to Edit Comments on Your Own Post in Instagram on an Android Device

To “edit” a comment you wrote on one of your posts, open the post in Google Chrome, copy and paste the comment in a note app to edit, repost the new version and delete the old one.

To do this using your Android device:

  1. Sign in to Instagram via the app.
  2. Locate the comment you want to edit.
  3. Tap the vertical three-dotted icon at the top right.
  4. Tap “Copy Link.”
  5. Exit Instagram to open Chrome.

Once you’re on Chrome or the browser of your choice, follow these steps:

  1. Paste the link into the address bar to navigate there.
  2. Tap on the vertical three-dotted menu at the top right.
  3. Choose “Desktop site,” you’ll be redirected to Instagram’s desktop version.
  4. To stop the prompts to use the app version, tap “Log in” on the top navigation bar to sign in to your account.
  5. Not all comments will display. To see them all, tap “View all x comments.”
  6. Go to the comment you wish to change, then tap and hold to get the “Select All” and “Copy” options.
  7. Choose “Select All” to select the text, then tap “Copy.” The text will be copied to your clipboard.
  8. Open a note app, then tap and hold on anywhere on the page to get the “Paste” option.
  9. “Paste” the text, then edit the text.
  10. Once you’ve changed the text to your liking, select and copy the text to your clipboard.

To delete the old comment:

  1. Go back to the comment in the Instagram app.
  2. Tap and hold in the comment area.
  3. Tap on the white and blue trash bin icon to delete it.
  4. A red banner will display confirming the deletion.

Then, to repost your amended version:

  1. Select the text icon underneath your photo or video.
  2. Inside the text field, tap and hold.
  3. Tap “Paste” to paste your edited comment from the clipboard.
  4. If everything looks correct, tap “Post.”

How to Edit Comments on Your Own Post in Instagram on a PC

You can’t edit the comments you or someone else has made on your posts, but you can delete them directly from the desktop site.

Before you start, please note that it takes multiple stages to “change” comments on the platform. Here are the steps for changing comments on a PC:

  1. Go to Instagram.com and sign in to your account.
  2. Find the comment you want to edit.
  3. Highlight the text, right-click, then select “Copy.” The text will be copied to your clipboard.
  4. To edit the comment, open a note app.
  5. Right-click and select “Paste” to edit the text in the note app.
  6. Once you’re done, highlight the text, right-click and select “Copy.”

To delete the old comment:

  1. Find the old version of the comment on the platform.
  2. Hover your mouse over it, then click on the three-dotted icon that appears on the right.
  3. Select “Delete” from the pop-up.

To repost the edited version:

  1. Underneath the posts photo or video, right-click on the space that says “Add a comment…”
  2. Click “Paste” to add your edited comment from the clipboard.
  3. Once you’re happy with the final comment, press “Post.”

Can I Edit a Comment I Made on Someone Else’s Post?

Instagram doesn’t allow you to edit a comment made on someone’s post. However, you can delete a comment and repost an edited version.

First, you’ll need to access the comment via the desktop site as Instagram does not allow comment copying from the mobile app. Everything can be done using your mobile app. Here’s how to make changes:

  1. Sign in to the Instagram app.
  2. Find the comment you want to edit.
  3. At the top right, tap on the three-dotted menu.
  4. Choose “Copy Link.”
  5. Leave Instagram to open a web browser, e.g., Safari or Google Chrome.
  6. Paste the link into the address bar.

From iPhone:

Now you need to delete the old comment:

  1. Go back to the comment on Instagram.
  2. Long press the comment.
  3. (iPhone) Tap on the white and red trash can icon.
    (Android)Tap on the white and blue trash can icon.
  4. A red banner will display confirming the deletion.

To repost your edited version:

  1. Tap the text icon beneath your photo or video.
  2. Tap and hold the text field.
  3. Select “Paste” to paste your edited comment from the clipboard.
  4. Once you’re happy with the comment, tap “Post.”

Can I Edit Someone Else’s Comment?

Instagram does not allow Instagrammers to edit each other’s posts. However, if the comment was made on one of your posts, you can delete it. Here’s how to delete a comment from the mobile app:

  1. Sign in to your Instagram account and find the comment in question.
  2. Swipe left on the comment.
  3. To delete it:
    • (iPhone) Tap on the white and red trash can.
    • (Android) Tap on the white and blue trash bin.
