How to Set a Nickname in Discord

While you can edit your Discord ID easily, you may not want to do that every time you switch from server to server. That’s why Discord implemented the nicknames feature, where users can choose how they want to be known in different locations. However, there are some details not many know about these nicknames.

How to Set a Nickname in Discord

If you’re new to Discord and want to customize your nickname, you’ve come to the right place. Handles are great if you frequent many servers, and you can even edit them later on. Keep reading to learn how.

How to Set a Nickname in Discord on a PC

Discord nicknames can be letters, numbers, or even special symbols. You can always change your nickname when the need arises. However, your server must have the “Change Nickname” permission enabled first.

The permission is usually attached to a role, as you can’t change your nickname without one. Many servers let members change their nicknames on a whim, as it’s considered harmless.

There are two main ways to change your nickname on Discord, and both are available no matter the platform. As long as you have a mouse and keyboard or controller, you can always change how you want to be known.

Let’s take a look at the first method:

  1. Log in to your Discord account on PC.
  2. Select the server you want to change your nickname in.
  3. Click on the downward-facing arrow under the server’s name and banner.
  4. Click on “Edit Server Profile” and proceed to “Nickname”.
  5. Type whatever you want your handle to be.
  6. Select “Save” to confirm your decision.

Whether you’re using the web-based version or Discord client doesn’t matter. You can also change your nickname on any official build of Discord’s client.

The second way is to use a slash command. It’s a rather public action that some users might not want to employ, but you can still use it for fun. It would be best if you used it in bot channels to prevent clogging up the general chat.

  1. Launch Discord for PC.
  2. Go to the server you wish to change your nickname in.
  3. Go to a text channel meant for executing bot commands.
  4. Type “/nick” and any combination of letters and numbers you like.
  5. Press the Enter key twice.
  6. You should see Clyde notifying you of a successful nickname change.

You’re the only one that can see Clyde’s message, but since many servers prefer you keep bot usage in designated channels, it’s best to obey the rules.

In a rather humorous turn of events, some admins and mods have the power to change your nickname for you. If you find your nickname changed in a server, that’s likely what happened. Don’t worry, as you can always change it back.

Another thing you can do is to clear your nickname. When you’re using the first method, leave the text box blank. That will make you revert to your Discord username.
