What Does No Route Mean in Discord?

The “No Route” error informs you that you cannot join a voice channel at this time. The reason for this varies, but here are some common scenarios where the “No Route” error might occur:

  • Your ISP made a change to your Dynamic IP address.
  • You’re using a VPN solution without User Datagram Protocol (UDP).
  • Your network doesn’t support “Quality of Service High Packet Priority.”
  • You’re trying to connect to a server hosted on a different continent.
  • Discord is blocked by antivirus protection or a third-party firewall.

How To Fix No Route in Discord on a Windows 10 PC

For a successful connection to a Discord voice channel, try these troubleshooting steps on your Windows 10 PC:

1. Reboot Your Modem/Router and PC

Sometimes a simple reboot is enough to clear any technical problem, so let’s start with that.

A “No Route” error is commonly displayed when an IPV6 connection has been interrupted by a change made to your Dynamic IP. Even if you have a static IP, reboot your modem/router to refresh your network settings, and unstick any system resources that may have become stuck. Now try connecting to the channel again.

If you’re still seeing the error, reboot your PC and try connecting again.

2. Enable UDP on Your VPN

Discord works well using VPNs with the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) enabled. So if you’ve changed your VPN settings recently, try changing them back to what they were before, and reboot your PC before attempting to connect to the channel again. This action will re-establish your connection and, hopefully, allow you to connect successfully.

3. Ensure That Discord Can Get Through Your Antivirus and Firewall Settings

To ensure that Discord is allowed to make connections, here’s how to create an exemption for Discord on your Windows firewall:

  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. In the search bar, type Control Panel.
  3. Click the View by drop-down menu and select Small icons.
  4. Choose Windows Defender Firewall.
  5. Select Advanced settings
    .
  6. Select Inbound Rules from the left sidebar, then click New Rule in the right sidebar.
  7. Choose Port for the new rule, then click Next.
  8. Under Does this rule apply… select TCP.
  9. Click on the Specific local ports option.
  10. Type 443 in the text field, then click Next.
  11. Choose the Allow the connection option, then click Next.
  12. At Where does the rule apply? select all three options: Domain, Private, and Public, then hit Next.
  13. Enter a name in the Name field, such as Discord, and a description if you wish, then click Finish.

How To Fix No Route in Discord on a Mac

Try these steps via your macOS to clear the connection problem to the voice channel in Discord:

1. Reboot Your Modem/Router and Computer

The “No Route” error message is a common cause when an ISP changes an IP address. If you have a Dynamic or Static IP, rebooting your modem or router will refresh your network settings. Try this, then see if the error still occurs. If it does, reboot your computer and try again.

2. Renew Your IP Address

Since the IP address assigned to your computer might have changed, if your system is configured to use “DHCP,” manually renewing your IP could help. Here’s how to do this on your Mac:

  1. Click on the Apple icon (Menu).
  2. Select System Preferences, then Network.
  3. Choose the network service from the list on the left needing their IP renewed.
  4. Select Advanced, TCP/IP, then Renew DHCP Lease.
  5. Reboot your Mac to update the change, then try again.

3. Enable UDP on Your VPN

Discord works betters via VPNs that utilize the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) on connections. Ensure that this option is turned on in your VPN settings. If you’ve changed anything recently, try reverting it to see if that helps. This action will re-establish your connection. Before attempting to connect to the voice channel again, reboot your Mac.

How To Fix No Route in Discord on an iPhone

To get rid of the “No Route” error message in Discord on your iPhone, try the following troubleshooting steps:

1. Restart the App and Your iPhone

Try closing Discord and then restarting your phone. Doing this tends to clear any technical conflicts and glitches. Once your phone restarts, sign in to Discord and try connecting to the voice channel again.

2. Disable Quality of Service

Quality of Service (QoS) in the iOS Discord app reduces lag and ensures high performance by prioritizing data packets while in transit. Discord and similar apps use “High Priority Packets,” which can cause problems. The “No Route” error message is the result of such issues. However, there is currently no way to disable QOS—it disappeared from the settings. If you discover a way to turn QOS on/off, let us know in the comments.

3. Update Your Voice Server Region

Another cause of the “No Route” error could be when the voice channel you’re trying to connect to is hosted on a different continent, or there is an outage in that region. The further away the server is, the more ping and lag issues you’ll face. Therefore, you’ll need to choose a geographically closer server by asking the server admin to make the change.

If you’re an admin, here’s how that’s done:

  1. Sign in to the Discord app.
  2. Tap on the server or the three dots beside it.
  3. From the menu that opens, tap the Settings.
  4. In the Server settings window, tap Channels in the left panel if it’s not already selected.
  5. You’ll be presented with various information about the server. Next to Region Override, tap Automatic.
  6. On the server region screen, choose the closest region to you.
  7. Restart the Discord app, then try connecting to the voice channel again.

How To Fix No Route in Discord on an Android Device

To fix the Discord “No Route” error message, try the following tips on your Android device:

1. Restart the App and Your Android Device

Close the Discord app, then restart your device. This can sometimes do the trick in resolving basic technical glitches. Once your phone restarts, sign in to Discord and try connecting to the voice channel again.

2. Disable Quality of Service

Quality of Service (QoS) reduces lag and ensures high performance by prioritizing data packets during transit. Discord and similar apps use “High Priority Packets,” but the feature can cause problems. The “No Route” error message could be one of them. However, there is currently no way to disable QOS in the Android app. The option disappeared. If you know a way, let us know.

3. Update Your Voice Server Region

The “No Route” error could also result from you trying to connect to a channel hosted on a different continent or there is a problem for that region. To prevent ping and lag issues, you’ll need to select a geographically closer server by asking the server admin to change the server’s voice region.

If you’re an admin, here’s how to do it:

  1. Sign in to the Discord app.
  2. Tap the server or tap the three dots beside it.
  3. In the pop-up menu, tap Settings.
  4. From the Server settings window, tap Channels in the left panel if it’s not already selected.
  5. This screen will display information about the channel. Next to Region Override, tap Automatic.
  6. Select the closest region to you.
  7. Restart the Discord app, then try reconnecting to the channel again.

How To Fix No Route in Discord While Using a VPN

Discord works well when your VPN has enabled the “User Datagram Protocol” for connections. If you’ve recently changed your VPN settings, try reverting to the previous setting, rebooting your device, and attempting to reconnect to the voice channel again.

How To Fix No Route in Discord While Using a Mobile Hotspot

Mobile hotspots use different IP addresses than those assigned to your device when connecting you to the internet. Discord doesn’t work well with changing IP addresses unless the change made now matches the connecting device.

We suggest you try connecting to the voice channel again using a regular Wi-Fi connection so that Discord can see your actual IP address.

For more information, contact a Discord technical support team member using the “Help?” chat option in the right corner of their support pages.

The Route Is Now Clear

A “No Route” error message is shown when there is a problem with your connection to a voice channel. Some of the most common causes include a Dynamic IP address – Discord needs the Internet-facing IP address and the one assigned to your device to be the same. To fix this, you can connect to a voice channel hosted on a different continent or get a server admin to allow you to join a server closer to where you are. Or sometimes, a simple reboot of your modem/router and device is enough to resolve it.
